The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

Note: Volcanic eruptions burned up a crapload of oil, gas and coal in the Siberian Traps 250-ish million years ago. That caused huge amounts of CO2 to enter the atmosphere from all the burning of the fossil fuels. The oceans heated up and went anoxic. Then the ancient anaerobic bacteria and archaea that produce hydrogen sulfide went nuts reproducing and poisoned the oceans and the atmosphere, and pretty much everything died. The same thing is happening now, with just one difference: instead of volcanoes burning up tons of oil, gas and coal in one (large) geographic area, this time it's human civilization doing it anywhere and everywhere. But the Earth doesn't care who or what burns the stuff or why it burns - the Earth reacts WHEN it burns.
So we have taken the recipe for extinction from the Permian-Triassic and replaced the volcano ingredient with human civilization. Other that that, everything's the same, although we've probably burned up the oil, gas and coal FASTER than the volcanic eruptions did, so things may be worse this time around. In any case, the human race won't survive the current extinction event, nor will most species that currently exist on this planet. Oxygen-free 'dead zones' are already spreading throughout the oceans. Unexplained rotten egg odors are hitting random areas around the planet - that's hydrogen sulfide. A repeat of the Permian-Triassic extinction event is already well under way...
