Note: They might have thought it was suspicious initially because he may have had some head wounds. When people drop dead, their knees buckle and they tend to fall forward, sometimes smashing their face and/or head on something on the way down, which then leaves a corpse with a head wound, and maybe some pooled blood in the area if they just fell unconscious first and slowly died instead of dropping dead immediately...
